What accuracy does a gold scale actually need?

Readability (the smallest step the display shows) should match the smallest decision you make at the counter. Weighing a 10 g ring on a 0.01 g balance means the reading is within one part in a thousand of the item's weight — tighter than any buying-or-selling conversation at the counter requires. Moving to a 0.001 g balance makes sense when your daily work is light items — thin chains, small findings, stone parcels under a few grams — where a hundredth of a gram is a meaningful part of the value.

The 0.1 mg analytical tier is for assay and refining work, not the counter: it needs a draft shield, a stable bench and warm-up time, which is exactly what a busy shop doesn't have.

Counter balances: the 0.01 g workhorses most shops buy

EK-610i — a 600 g × 0.01 g compact balance in the proven counter format: small footprint, fast, simple. The EK-i family runs from 120 g to 12 kg if your work is heavier.
