Which gold scale does a jewellery shop or workshop need?

Most jewellery shops do not need a laboratory balance. Day-to-day counter trade — weighing chains, bangles, coins, and scrap for buy-back — is served by a precision balance reading to 0.01 g with a capacity between roughly 600 g and 3 kg. Three A&D configurations cover it, all reading to 0.01 g and all able to drive an external customer display — a requirement for trade use in some markets — in the order we recommend them: the GF-3002A (3,200 g on a square pan) first, the FX-3000GD gold balance (3,200 g) next, and the EK-610i compact balance (600 g) where chains, rings and coins are the daily work. Each fits a counter or display case. The analytical tier above them earns its place in assay, refining, and high-value stone work rather than in everyday retail.

The FX-GD gold balances are A&D's dedicated line for this trade and the second rung of our counter recommendation, after the GF-3002A. Mechanically each is the matching FX-i precision balance sold with gold-and-diamond-trade branding — the FX-3000GD is the FX-3000i — so the FX-i product pages describe them. They run from the FX-120GD at 122 g, the FX-200GD at 220 g and the FX-300GD at 320 g, all reading to 0.001 g, up to the FX-1200GD, FX-2000GD and FX-3000GD at 1,220 g, 2,200 g and 3,200 g, which read to 0.01 g. The milligram resolution belongs to the three smaller capacities; the larger three trade it for range, and it is worth being clear which of the two a buying desk actually needs. All six use the Super Hybrid Sensor with roughly one-second stabilisation, a vacuum fluorescent display and an external calibration mass, and carat pans are available as an accessory. For most shops the choice is between the FX-300GD, when light pieces need the 0.001 g step, and the FX-3000GD for everything up to bars. The FX-GD balances display tola and tael — and so do the FX-i balances we stock, which are the same instruments — confirmed on our own stock, since the data sheet publishes no units list, so a buying desk gets its trade units without asking.

For gold jewellery manufacturers, precision balances are used at every stage: incoming metal verification, alloy preparation, casting yield measurement, and final piece quality control. Bullion, refining and assay: where 0.1 mg is the working figure

Bullion, refining and assay work is normally weighed at 0.1 mg or 0.01 mg readability — not because a rule names those figures, but because at Dubai gold prices a tenth of a milligram carries real value and an assay has to survive the customer's own check. Where the balance settles a transaction rather than informing an internal check, it separately falls under UAE legal metrology and is verified by MOIAT. A&D Japan's GR-200 analytical balance (210 g × 0.1 mg) is the one we recommend and keep on hand for this work: fully automatic internal calibration corrects the drift caused by temperature changes in the Gold Souk environment without operator intervention, and it carries tola, tael and messghal as standard units. Where 0.01 mg is genuinely needed, the dual-range GH-202 and GH-252 semi-micro balances are supplied to order. The unique Super Hybrid Sensor eliminates the moving parts that cause wear in traditional electromagnetic balances, extending service life significantly in high-cycle trading environments.

Precious metal refineries and assay laboratories require even greater resolution. Supplied to order from A&D Japan, the BM Series micro balances deliver 0.01 mg and 0.001 mg readability with a built-in fanless ioniser that eliminates static charge — the primary cause of erratic readings when handling gold leaf, platinum powders, and precious metal catalysts. The large weighing chamber with interlockable slide doors accommodates crucibles and larger assay vessels without compromising draught shield performance.

Which balance weighs diamonds and gemstones?

Where stones rather than metal are the subject, the FZ-CT/FX-CT carat balances — supplied to order through A&D Gulf rather than held as a stocked line — read in metric carat rather than converting from grams. The FZ-500CT/FX-500CT covers 510 ct (102 g), the FZ-700CT/FX-700CT 760 ct (152 g) and the FZ-1200CT/FX-1200CT 1,260 ct (252 g), all reading to 0.001 ct with linearity of ±0.002 ct and stabilising in about two seconds on the fast setting. The FZ-CT models carry a built-in calibration mass and adjust at a single key press, which matters when a stone is on the pan and the customer is watching; the FX-CT models calibrate against an external weight. Two carat pans, silver and black, are standard, and the antistatic-treated breeze break sits within a footprint smaller than a sheet of A4.

Trade units and purity: confirm these before you order

Trade units are the specification most often misread, and the difference is decided at the point of order rather than afterwards. The portable HT-500 — the same instrument A&D also sells as the HT-500GD — ships multi-unit as standard: 510 g × 0.1 g with tola, tael and troy ounce built in alongside grams (confirmed on our own stock), running on AA cells or mains, with a stackable carrying case — which is what makes it the buying-trip and off-site valuation scale, and we hold it in depth. The FX-GD gold balances, and the FX-i balances we stock (the same instruments), also display tola and tael (confirmed on our stock), and the GR Series analytical balances carry thirteen units as standard. On the remaining lines the standard set stops short of tola and tael, and only one further unit may be added on request. Purity has a weighing answer, within limits. Weighing an item in air and then suspended in water gives its density, which can be compared against the figure expected for the claimed fineness — for a solid, unhollowed piece, a quick and non-destructive first indication of whether the metal is what it is said to be. The limits are real and worth stating: different alloy compositions can share a density, hollow, soldered or stone-set items defeat the method outright, and a density figure is a bulk property rather than an elemental analysis. Formal determination of fineness remains assay work. Which balances can do it matters too — the GR Series takes the AD-1653 density determination kit, and the 1 mg GX-A/GF-A models take the GXA-13, which lets the balance compute the density itself.
