Which gold scale does a jewellery shop or workshop need?

Most jewellery shops do not need a laboratory balance. Day-to-day counter trade — weighing chains, bangles, coins, and scrap for buy-back — is served by a precision balance reading to 0.01 g with a capacity between roughly 600 g and 3 kg. Bullion, refining and assay work is normally weighed at 0.1 mg or 0.01 mg readability — not because a rule names those figures, but because at Dubai gold prices a tenth of a milligram carries real value and an assay has to survive the customer's own check. Where the balance settles a transaction rather than informing an internal check, it separately falls under UAE legal metrology and is verified by MOIAT. Which balance weighs diamonds and gemstones?

Where stones rather than metal are the subject, the FZ-CT/FX-CT carat balances read in metric carat rather than converting from grams. The FZ-500CT/FX-500CT covers 510 ct (102 g), the FZ-700CT/FX-700CT 760 ct (152 g) and the FZ-1200CT/FX-1200CT 1,260 ct (252 g), all reading to 0.001 ct with linearity of ±0.002 ct and stabilising in about two seconds on the fast setting. The FZ-CT models carry a built-in calibration mass and adjust at a single key press, which matters when a stone is on the pan and the customer is watching; the FX-CT models calibrate against an external weight. Two carat pans, silver and black, are standard, and the antistatic-treated breeze break sits within a footprint smaller than a sheet of A4.

Trade units and purity: confirm these before you order

Trade units are the specification most often misread, and the difference is decided at the point of order rather than afterwards. The portable HT-500GD is the one instrument here that genuinely ships multi-unit: 510 g × 0.1 g with nine units built in, including pennyweight, metric carat, tael, tola and troy ounce, a quoted battery life of roughly 450 hours on alkaline AA cells, and the ability to weigh without leaving its carrying case — which is what makes it the buying-trip and off-site valuation scale. The GR Series analytical balances are the other, with thirteen units as standard. Everywhere else the standard set stops short of tola and tael, and only one further unit may be added on request. Purity has a weighing answer, within limits. Weighing an item in air and then suspended in water gives its density, which can be compared against the figure expected for the claimed fineness — for a solid, unhollowed piece, a quick and non-destructive first indication of whether the metal is what it is said to be. The limits are real and worth stating: different alloy compositions can share a density, hollow, soldered or stone-set items defeat the method outright, and a density figure is a bulk property rather than an elemental analysis. Formal determination of fineness remains assay work. Which balances can do it matters too — the GR Series takes the AD-1653 density determination kit, and the 1 mg GX-A/GF-A models take the GXA-13, which lets the balance compute the density itself.
