Food & Beverage
Where a checkweigher or portioning scale is a HACCP monitoring point, Codex requires the monitoring to detect loss of control at that CCP and the results to be recorded — so an auditor will ask how you know the instrument reads correctly. Where product is sold by weight or the pack carries a declared quantity, UAE legal metrology applies, administered by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MOIAT), with prepack quantity control set by Cabinet Resolution No. 83 of 2024. The GCC Standardization Organization publishes the Gulf standards behind this, including GSO OIML R 51-1:2021 for checkweighers, which member states adopt and enforce nationally. 6-monthly calibration recommended for high-throughput lines.

Oil, Gas & Petrochemical
Custody transfer and process control weighing require traceable calibration with low uncertainty budgets. Operators normally impose this through the quality-management clause of their own technical specifications: ISO 9001:2015 clause 7.1.5.2 requires measuring equipment to be calibrated or verified against standards traceable to national or international measurement standards. Gold & Precious Metals
Gold and jewellery weighing carries two separate obligations. Where the scale settles a transaction it is a legal measuring instrument, verified under UAE legal metrology by MOIAT — which names gold and jewellery scales explicitly — and in Dubai by Dubai Municipality's Dubai Central Laboratory under MOIAT authorisation. Where you are checking your own balances, the reference weights must be fine enough to prove the point: we calibrate with OIML R 111 Class E2/F1 weights and state the expanded uncertainty (k=2) with the full budget, so you can check the result against your own tolerance. Confirm any free-zone or licensing requirement with your own authority.

Laboratory & Research
Accredited testing laboratories must show that their measuring equipment is traceably calibrated and that the uncertainty is fit for the tests they report. A&D Gulf certificates state expanded uncertainty with a k=2 coverage factor and the full uncertainty budget, so you can check it against your own tolerance. Where your accreditation specifically requires an accredited calibration certificate, that must be issued by an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory.

ISO 9001:2015 clause 7.1.5.2 requires measuring equipment to be calibrated or verified, or both, at specified intervals or prior to use against traceable measurement standards — where traceability is a requirement, or where you judge it essential to confidence in your results. What is ISO-traceable calibration?
- ISO-traceable calibration is the process of adjusting and certifying a measuring instrument against reference standards traceable — through an unbroken chain of comparisons — to a national or international measurement authority. For weighing instruments in the UAE, A&D Gulf's calibration certificates document the full traceability chain of the reference weights used to recognised national standards (ultimately the international SI via BIPM), and state the measurement uncertainty of the result — with on-site calibration available, so the instrument never has to leave your facility.

How often should precision balances be calibrated?
- No standard sets a universal interval — the standards require you to set one and justify it. Annual calibration is the common baseline for laboratory analytical balances in pharmaceutical, food and chemical work, and 6-monthly is usual for production-floor scales in continuous or heavy shift use. EU GMP Chapter 3 §3.41 requires calibration at defined intervals by appropriate methods, ICH Q7 §5.30 requires an established schedule, and ISO 9001:2015 clause 7.1.5.2 requires calibration or verification at specified intervals or prior to use — none of them names a frequency. Recalibration is also required after any relocation, repair, firmware update, or reading anomaly — regardless of elapsed time since the last certificate. Where the instrument is used in trade, MOIAT sets the legal re-verification interval separately.
