Weighing Instruments for Oil & Gas Operations

Industrial scales · Explosion-safe environments · Offshore-rated · Calibration · JAFZA-based

The UAE's oil and gas sector — spanning Abu Dhabi's upstream ADNOC operations, Dubai's downstream facilities, and the GCC's vast network of refineries and petrochemical plants — demands weighing instruments that perform reliably in hazardous, corrosive, and high-temperature environments. A&D Gulf supplies industrial-grade A&D Japan scales and balances built for Zone 1/Zone 2 classified areas, IP65 and IP69K rated enclosures, and the extreme ambient conditions found in the Gulf region.

Platform scales, floor scales, and bench scales used in oil field operations must maintain accuracy across the 45°C–60°C ambient temperatures common in UAE summer conditions. A&D's industrial platform and washdown bench scales use sealed load cells with IP65 and IP69K ratings, making them resistant to hydrocarbon vapours, water ingress, and the caustic cleaning agents used in process environments. For hazardous areas, A&D Japan also supplies ATEX-certified stainless-steel platform scales for use in Zone 1 and Zone 2 classified explosive atmospheres — critical for chemical weighing near hydrocarbon storage.

Laboratory and QC work within refinery and petrochemical facilities requires precision balances with chemical resistance and temperature stability. A&D's FZ-iWP/FX-iWP Series precision balances are IP65 rated — the only standard-level precision balance with full dust and water resistance — making them the preferred choice for field laboratories where splashed solvents and process fluids are a daily reality. The internal calibration mechanism maintains accuracy without operator intervention, even as laboratory temperatures shift.

Catalyst management is a major weighing application in petrochemical plants, where precise quantities of catalyst must be dispensed, recovered, and tracked. The high capacity of A&D's GX-K/GF-K Series (up to 31 kg at 0.01 g readability) combined with IP65 protection covers the full range from small laboratory catalyst samples to process-scale catalyst charges. A&D Gulf's calibration service provides on-site certification of all weighing equipment against traceable reference standards, with certificates that record the reference standards used, the test points, the results at each point and the expanded measurement uncertainty (k=2) — the evidence an ISO 9001 or HSE audit of measuring equipment normally asks for.

Key Requirements in This Sector

  • ATEX Zone 1/Zone 2 certification for explosive atmosphere environments
  • IP65 / IP69K ingress protection for water and dust
  • Stainless steel construction for corrosive process environments
  • Accuracy across 15°C–60°C ambient temperature range
  • Calibration certificates traceable to national standards for HSE audits
  • Offshore-rated enclosures for marine and platform applications

Frequently Asked Questions

What weighing equipment is suitable for ATEX Zone 1/Zone 2 areas in UAE oil facilities?
ATEX Zone 1 areas require weighing instruments with Ex d (flameproof) or Ex e (increased safety) certification. A&D's certified option is the EK-AEP Series intrinsically safe compact balance — ATEX II 1G / IECEx Ex ia op is IIB T3 Ga and FM (US & Canada), rated for use down to Zone 0 — supplied with its EU Declaration of Conformity and certificate documentation. A&D does not currently offer an ATEX-certified platform scale, and no UAE fire or safety regulation mandates ATEX marking. Tell us your zone classification, gas group and temperature class and we will confirm what A&D can supply and what has to be sourced elsewhere.
Can industrial scales operate accurately in UAE summer ambient temperatures?
Standard industrial scales are typically rated to 40°C operating temperature, which is inadequate for UAE outdoor applications where ambient temperatures regularly reach 48°C–52°C. A&D precision balances are specified over roughly 5–40°C, so outdoor or unconditioned areas above that sit outside the manufacturer's stated range whatever the brand. The GX-K/GF-K and GP series use A&D's Super Hybrid Sensor rather than strain-gauge load cells, and internal automatic calibration on the GX models corrects span as temperature drifts. Site the instrument in a conditioned or shaded position, choose an internally calibrating model, and shorten the calibration interval over summer. Tell us the actual ambient at the weighing point and we will confirm what A&D specifies for it.
Does A&D Gulf provide on-site calibration for refinery and offshore facilities?
Yes, subject to the site's own contractor induction and HSE approval, which we complete with you per site before the visit — those passes are issued per contractor and per site, so we arrange them for your facility rather than holding them in advance. Our engineers carry traceable reference weights in portable transport cases and can work at refinery and oil field facilities anywhere in the UAE, and in Saudi Arabia through our own people there. Certificates can be issued the same day for operational continuity, documenting the instrument and its serial number, the reference standards used, the test points, the results and the expanded measurement uncertainty (k=2) — the evidence an ISO 9001 or HSE audit of measuring equipment normally asks for.
