How to Choose an Analytical Balance — Readability, Capacity and Calibration

An analytical balance reads to 0.1 mg (0.0001 g) or finer, and choosing one comes down to three decisions: the readability your smallest sample truly requires, the capacity your heaviest container requires, and internal versus external calibration. Most UAE labs buying their first analytical balance need a 0.1 mg instrument with 120 – 320 g capacity and internal calibration. Semi-micro (0.01 mg) and micro (0.001 mg) balances exist for genuinely small samples — buying finer than the work requires adds cost and installation demands without adding a single usable digit.

The three analytical tiers — and who each is for

The dual-range semi-micro models are the quiet bargain of the middle tier: the GH-252 reads 0.01 mg over its first 101 g and 0.1 mg to 250 g — semi-micro precision for small samples and analytical capacity for everything else, in one instrument.

Decision 1 — readability: match it to your smallest sample

Work backwards from the smallest quantity you weigh as a decision — the sample itself, not the container. If your smallest routine sample is 1 g or more, a 0.1 mg balance is correct; reach for semi-micro or micro only when samples in the tens-of-milligram range are your daily reality.

Minimum sample weight is the specification everyone discovers too late. A balance can display a reading far below the smallest sample it can weigh to a defensible accuracy. Minimum weight is determined by the repeatability a balance actually achieves in your room — not by a fixed multiple of the display readability — and A&D publishes a typical figure per series: about 140 mg for its 0.1 mg models, and about 1.4 g for 1 mg models. The Fortis series states its USP Chapter 41 minimum-weight guidance directly in the specifications. Decision 2 — capacity: weigh the container, not just the sample

Capacity must cover your heaviest tare plus sample — a 100 mL glass beaker can consume most of a 120 g balance before any sample is added. The common UAE lab choice is 220 – 320 g for exactly this reason. A&D's mainstream analytical models run from 102 g (Fortis FZ/FX-104) to 320 g (GH-300, GX-AE models), with the BM-500 extending the 0.1 mg tier to 520 g and the wider GX-A/GF-A family extending into precision territory beyond that.

Decision 3 — internal or external calibration?

Internal calibration — a built-in reference weight applied automatically or at the press of a key — is the practical choice for a working lab: daily checks without handling reference weights. External calibration, where you apply a certified weight yourself, is a lower-cost route if your lab already owns certified weights and a calibration routine.

Check the letter per family, because it differs: in the Fortis and FZ-i/FX-i generations, FZ models are internal-calibration and FX models external; in the Apollo family it is the GX-A models that calibrate internally while GF-A models calibrate externally. The GH, GR and BM analytical series all include internal calibration as standard.

The new generation: Fortis FZ/FX

Fortis is A&D's current analytical generation — successor to the discontinued HR-AZ/HR-A series — with roughly 2-second stabilisation on the 0.1 mg models (FZ/FX-104, -154, -254 and the dual-range -254D) and an antistatic-coated breeze break, because static is a real error source in dry, air-conditioned Gulf labs. Labs replacing an HR-series balance map straight onto Fortis capacity-for-capacity. (The Fortis family also includes IP65 washdown -WP variants on its precision 0.001 g and 0.01 g capacities — useful near wet processes, though not part of the 0.1 mg analytical tier.)

Installation: the environment is part of the instrument

At 0.1 mg, the room matters. Four rules prevent most complaints of a faulty balance: place it on a rigid bench away from air-conditioning outlets (Gulf labs run strong AC — draughts are the number-one local error source) · use the draft shield for every reading · allow warm-up after power-on before critical work · manage static on plastic vessels and powders. The GX-AE and BM series build a fanless ionizer directly into the instrument for exactly this, and the GX-AE additionally logs impact shocks that could disturb results in busy labs.
