How a Weighbridge Works: Load Cells, Indicators & Calibration Explained

A weighbridge (also called a truck scale) is a large platform scale that weighs entire vehicles. A steel or concrete deck rests on a set of load cells — sensors that convert force into an electrical signal — and a junction box combines their signals for the weighing indicator, which displays and records the weight. Net cargo weight is calculated by weighing the vehicle loaded and empty.
What is a weighbridge?
A weighbridge is the largest weighing instrument most businesses will ever own: a driveable platform, typically 6 to 24 metres long, rated for gross vehicle weights from 30 to 150 tonnes or more. It answers one commercially critical question — how much material actually entered or left the site — which is why weighbridges sit at the gates of aggregate quarries, recycling yards, ports, free-zone logistics hubs, and food and feed mills across the UAE.
Despite the size, a weighbridge is conceptually the same instrument as a bench scale: a platform, force sensors, and an indicator. The engineering difference is scale — each sensor may carry 30 tonnes, the platform must survive braking forces and thermal expansion, and the electronics live outdoors year-round.
The four components that do the weighing
The deck is the driveable structure — prefabricated steel modules or steel-reinforced concrete. It does no measuring itself; its job is to transfer the vehicle's weight onto the sensors below without binding or rubbing against the foundation.
The load cells are the actual measuring elements. A typical full-length weighbridge sits on six to ten of them — compression type or double-ended shear-beam type — each producing an electrical signal proportional to the force it carries. Because a truck never distributes its weight evenly, no single cell sees the "right" number; only the combination does.
The junction box combines the signals from all load cells into one, with trimming adjustments so each corner of the bridge reads consistently. It is the most humble and most failure-prone part of the chain — a corroded junction box is behind a large share of "drifting weighbridge" complaints.
The weighing indicator (terminal) converts the combined signal into a displayed, recorded weight. Modern indicators do far more than display: ticket printing, gross/tare memory per vehicle, and RS-232 or Ethernet output that feeds weights straight into an ERP, gate-automation, or dispatch system — which is exactly the part A&D Gulf supplies and upgrades most often.
How a weighment actually happens
A standard transaction is two weighings. The loaded truck drives on and stops with all wheels on the deck; the indicator waits for the reading to stabilise and records the gross weight. After unloading, the empty truck is weighed again — the tare. Net cargo weight is simply gross minus tare. For regular vehicles, the tare can be stored in the indicator so a single pass is enough.
Two details matter for accuracy: the whole vehicle must be on the deck (a wheel on the approach ramp invalidates the reading), and the vehicle must be stationary with brakes released, so no external force leans on the structure. Good site discipline — level approaches, clean deck gaps, one vehicle at a time — contributes as much to repeatable results as the hardware does.
Pit-mounted vs surface-mounted
A pit-mounted weighbridge sits flush with the ground in a concrete pit: it saves yard space and lets traffic cross in any direction, but needs drainage (flash rain is not hypothetical, even in the Gulf) and safe under-deck access for cleaning and service. A surface-mounted weighbridge sits on the ground with approach ramps at each end: cheaper civil works, easier load-cell access, better ventilation — the default choice where space allows.
A related instrument, the axle weigher, weighs one axle group at a time as the vehicle crosses a short platform. It is useful for overload checking, but summed axle weights are inherently less accurate than a full-length weighbridge reading, because weight shifts between axles as the vehicle moves and brakes. For commercial transactions, a full-length deck is the reference method.
Why weighbridges drift — and what a retrofit fixes
Weighbridge electronics live in a hostile environment: 45 °C summers, humidity, dust, vibration, and lightning-induced surges travelling up the signal cables. The classic failure pattern is gradual — one load cell drifts or fails, the junction box corrodes, and readings become inconsistent corner-to-corner long before the system dies outright. Operators often compensate informally ("it always reads a bit high on the left") — which is exactly when disputes with customers begin.
The economics usually favour retrofitting over replacement: the deck and foundation — most of the original cost — routinely outlive the electronics by decades. Replacing the load cells, junction box, and indicator, then recalibrating, restores a weighbridge to specification at a fraction of the cost of a new installation, and adds modern data output in the process. Calibration and commercial use
A weighbridge is calibrated by applying known reference weights across the deck — corner by corner, then in combination — and adjusting until the indicated weight matches the reference throughout the range.
